Had an amazing weekend playing four concerts in three days with the world famous Hutchins Consort. Irvine, two shows in Encinitas and one in Santa Monica. Included standards arranged for THC (Vivaldi’s “Spring,” Ravel’s “Tzigane” featuring Chris Woods), Lili Boulanger’s remarkable “Un matin de Printemps” for flute and orchestra as well as four original Jimmy’s Schmendrix tunes arranged for the Schmendrix and THC. Big fun. Thanks to all of the members of THC led by Joe McNalley, as well as Lynn Willard, and Barry Wood and Mike French, recording engineers. Future audio posts will be up soon.
Begin the Beguine is easily one of my favorite songs. Because of its rather byzantine form, it’s not really a great improvisational vehicle but as a complete song with words AND music by Cole Porter, it doesn’t get much more profound. I hope you enjoy this performance.
As I said, if you remember this, well, you must be pretty old. I guess that I’m pretty old… Not sure if it’s made the comeback trail yet, but it should. Pretty amazing tune. Sorry about that F# flub towards the end; it just shows my humanity and inherent fallibility, as if I needed reminding!
Way too much fun playing with Tommy Gannon and Kevin Esposito at Casa de Mañana yesterday in La Jolla. Bring on the Purim gig!
