That’s what James Newton called Hubert. He was the first one to show us that it was possible to bring very fine classical flute playing into the realm of jazz. Before Hubert, most jazz flutists were saxophone players who were self-taught “doublers” on the flute. Although many of them had unassailable musicianship, their actual flute playing per se left a lot to be desired in terms of sound, articulation and intonation. Hubert liberated all of us, showed us the way and opened up my own personal musical path. I will always be deeply indebted to him. Thank you, Hubert.
Happy September, everyone. As I look around this jacked up world, I just would like to share this performance of R. Carlebach’s “L’ma’an Achai”, a prayer for peace for ALL people. Hope you enjoy it. Please feel free to share the link.
With my buddy, Joe McNalley. Killer bassist, a musician’s musician and a great guy. Thanks for being in my musical life, dude!
Hey everyone!
If you’re free tomorrow evening between 6:00pm and 8:00pm, please consider joining me for SoloYo. Cool jazz, hot Mexgrub and excellent microbrews. No cover and they also have good dishes for kids.
It’s on Mercy Road next to the Starbucks/Chevron across from the KFC. Here’s their website:
