With Hubert Laws – “The Jackie Robinson of the flute”

That’s what James Newton called Hubert.  He was the first one to show us that it was possible to bring very fine classical flute playing into the realm of jazz.  Before Hubert, most jazz flutists were saxophone players  who were self-taught “doublers” on the flute.  Although many of them had unassailable musicianship, their actual flute playing per se left a lot to be desired in terms of sound, articulation and intonation.  Hubert liberated all of us, showed us the way and opened up my own personal musical path.  I will always be deeply indebted to him.  Thank you, Hubert.HubertYoch

A prayer for peace…

Happy September, everyone.  As I look around this jacked up world, I just would like to share this performance of R. Carlebach’s “L’ma’an Achai”, a prayer for peace for ALL people.  Hope you enjoy it.  Please feel free to share the link.
